Laura Mvula: Live at South by Southwest

Given the Mardi Gras-like merry-go-round of BBQ, booze, bands, and general debauchery, the vibe at SXSW can understandably get a little overwhelming at times. This kind of sensory overload is why you make the trip to Texas of course, but every now and then it's nice to snag a breath and get your physical and mental bearings, so to speak. When a performance provides such a opportunity, it's even better. We saw it when Icelandic composer Olafur Arnalds played Baeble's Launch Pad event and again when British songwriter Laura Mvula took the stage at Hype Hotel to provide a wondrous, musical pause. Cooling off a sweaty capacity crowd with a fresh breeze of jazz, soul, folk, and classical numbers from her stunning debut, Sing To The Moon, Mvula's performance was a memorable moment of musical refinement SXSW desperately needed, and now it's classing up the site with this long awaited release of one of our favourite performances.

Charles Bradley: Live at La Cigale

How sweet revenge can be. Look at this man, who has gathered up all his lost years, who has shaped them with hope, with patience and whose moment has finally come. Look at him, this sixty-year-old man, who'd bring any kid to his knees. Watch him kneel himself at the very first song, his eyes full of tears as though thanking heaven for the opportunity to sing at last, pouring his heart out as though it were his first and last chance. Look at his sincerity, his strength, his energy. Look at this man, who gives himself entirely to the music. Look at 64-year-old Charles Bradley, showing his faith, moving mountains.

Hot Chip: Festival Days Off

Hot Chip return to Paris, for the Days Off Festival with their newly released fifth album, In our heads, which proves once more that the group isn't a hit machine but explorers of the hidden depths of pop and electronic music. It's hard to stop yourself dancing to their latest offering: Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor ventured out alone, performing solo and with other groups, in order to return to their original configuration this year with renewed vigour. No snobs, the multi-instrumentalists draw their inspiration from dance and electronic music, from Lo-Fi and hip-hop, to create their own astonishingly contemporary style, born of 60 years of musical history.
